UNIVERSITY OF LOUVAIN RECOGNISED SENIOR CHIEF KACHINDAMOTO

UNIVERSITY OF LOUVAIN RECOGNISED SENIOR CHIEF KACHINDAMOTO

On February 15th, 2024, the University of Louvain (UCLouvain) celebrated its 600th anniversary. As part of the celebrations, the institution recognised the contributions of three distinguished figures to humanity by awarding them honourary doctoral degrees.  Senior Chief Kachindamoto (Inkosi Kachindamoto as she is traditionally titled) of Dedza, Malawi, was awarded an Honorary Doctorate for her extraordinary efforts to eliminate child marriages.

This recognition highlights the Inkosi’s devotion to addressing entrenched traditional practices that impede social progress particularly for the girl child within her community and across Malawi. Throughout the event, the Aula Magna resonated with accolades for Senior Chief Kachindamoto, as scholars worldwide lauded her tireless pursuit and steadfast resolve to safeguard the rights of the girl child in her nation. Other awadees are Professor Seyla
Benhabib for her extraordinary contribution to political science and philosophy and Professor Bernard Faccroulle for making an extraordinary contribution to music industry.

Now a recipient of the Honorary Doctorate, Senior Chief Kachindamoto returnes to Dedza, Malawi, bolstered by global acclaim and support. Her journey serves as a beacon of hope, inspiring not only for Malawians but also for the global audience to believe in the power of dedication to a call, empathy, unity, and concerted efforts toward forging a better future. The 600th anniversary of UCLouvain thus not only celebrated its legacy but also set the stage for continued international collaboration in the battle against child marriages and for gender equality.

In her congratulatory message to Inkosi Kachindamoto, the Malawi Ambassador to the Kingdom of Belgium Her Excellency Dr. Naomi Ngwira said the achievement of Inkosi Kachindamoto not only reflects her personal excellence but also brings pride and honour to the entire nation of Malawi. She further said the commitment to foster positive changes and uplifting the lives of others serves as an inspiration to all of us.
